Research, Education and Action on Social and Environmental Justice Issues: OPIRG is a resource centre providing students and members of the Peterborough Community with activist skills training, a variety of social and environmental justice volunteer opportunities, links to the Peterborough activist community, and links to other activists across Canada. OPIRG seeks to address power imbalances prominent in our society and the connections between them (eg. environmental racism).
Most of OPIRG's volunteers are members of working groups' collectives of people who work together toward common goals on a particular issue. Anyone can join existing working groups or apply to start their own. Past working groups have included: Anti-Racism, Fair Trade Trent, Peace, Students Against Sweatshops, Friends of All Creatures Everywhere and many more.
OPIRG also provides an emergency food cupboard through the Kawartha Food Share program. The cupboard is open to everyone in the Peterborough community, and is available during office hours.
OPIRG members also sit on the Peterborough Pride planning committee, the Women's events planning committee and much more. We are a LGBT friendly organization and host several queer-centred events every year (including free film screenings, social events and more).
