Out Skiing

Out Skiing

Hello. My name is Frank and I organise the Out Skiing group. The Out Skiing group is run on a voluntary non-profit basis.

In 2001, I came up with the idea of forming a Gay and Lesbian ski group. I got a group together, mainly from the Out & About Hiking group. A group of 12 people, 11 men and 1 woman, went on our first ski trip in January 2002. The trip was to Passo Tonale in the Dolomite Mountains in Italy.

The Out Skiing group trips take place mid-January every year. The group’s main focus is downhill (alpine) skiing. Some of the group have also done snow blading and snow boarding. The group size has ranged form 8 to 22 and we have skied in Austria, France, Italy and Switzerland. I generally book with a ski package holiday company, so that there is a back-up service in the resort.

In addition, there have been some trips for smaller groups, including skiing in the Czech Republic and cross-country skiing in Italy and Norway.

Apart from the skiing, there is always a good social side to the group. We have meals together in the resort hotel and there are optional group activities after the evening dinner. Past activities included card games, charades, table quizzes, tobogganing and nights out to bars/restaurants/discos/casinos.

Gays, lesbians and their friends are welcome to join the group. Out Skiing is a straight-friendly group. You do not need to have skied before to join the group, as you can get skiing lessons in the resorts. There are no membership fees - you just pay the total cost of your ski trip and bring your own spending money.
