Sonya Iwasiuk - Mixed Media Artist
As an artist my ultimate goal is to capture the human experience – its beauty, vitality, darkness and fragility—and to continuously explore different methods of achieving this goal.
Much of my art is inspired by the stories of my childhood and the stories I have collected in my travels as an adult. Some stories I know intimately, others are shared with me and still others are revealed to me in the landscape. My work documents pivotal moments in personal experiences or seemingly insignificant snapshots of the ordinary, both of which reveal the larger story of lives both present and past. Each piece bears witness to an extracted memory on canvas or in a photograph.
Though my work is ultimately about people, it is not always figurative, with objects instead speaking to the human existence. I include found objects in most of my paintings adding a natural sculptural element. Each object—excavated from old abandoned cabins, ghost towns, farms, and shipyards from across western Canada.
