Gay & Lesbian Medical Association

GLMA, the world's largest and oldest association of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) health care professionals, has been advocating for equality in healthcare for the LGBT community since 1981.  We are an interdiciplinary organiation of health care professionals dedicated to equality in healthcare for LGBT patients and providers.  GLMA achieves its mission through education, public policy work, patient referrals, and in the promotion of research.

Our annual conference offers continung education credits to more than 400 participants annually.  We  offer an online CME courses promoting tobacco interventions.  Since 1992, the Lesbian Health Fund has awarded more than $636,000 in research grants for lesbian health research.

Today LGBT health disparities exist, in part, because of discrimination in health care settings and the difficulty in finding an LGBT friendly provider. There is still considerable ignorance about LGBT health issues, with many assuming that LGBT health involves only HIV/AIDS. In fact, the full scope of the LGBT health agenda includes breast and cervical cancer, hepatitis, mental health, substance abuse, tobacco use, depression, access to care for transgender persons, and other concerns. We are working to change these barriers to health equlity for the LGBT commnuity.  To learn more about what we have done recently, or to search our provider directory, please contact us.
