After graduation from USC Gould School of Law, (and meeting his husband of 52 years while they both were USC students), Mr. Eckardt was admitted to practice and became in house counsel.

Mr. Eckardt has been in the private practice of law since the year 1970, after serving as in house counsel, principally in land finance and land development, for Pacific Lighting Corporation, (now Sempra Energy), as part of a twenty member management group at the holding company for Southern California Gas Company.

Mr. Eckardt was the organizing attorney for a gay owned savings and loan association, Unity Savings and Loan Association.

He was a founding officer and director of LGBTA scholarship support group, USC Lambda Alumni Association, at University of Southern California. USC President Steven Sample granted Lambda its charter in October, 1992.

He was a founder and director, for more than six years, of Los Angeles Lawyers For Human Rights, now LGLA, Lesbian and Gay Lawyers of Los Angeles, in the year 1978. He was instrumental in obtaining for that organization Affiliate status with the Los Angeles County Bar Association, and in obtaining voting rights for that organization in The State Bar of California Conference of Delegates.

For six years, he was on the legal oversight committee, and ultimately was chair, for the Los Angeles Gay and Lesbian Community Services Center, (The Center).

He is of counsel to an old line law firm in downtown Los Angeles, which firm dates from the year 1923.
