If you are thinking about adventure travel to the Amazon rainforest, but you aren't sure about how a conservative, catholic country like Peru would treat you, let me put your mind at ease.
My name is Gart van Gennip. In 2006, I came to Iquitos as an English teacher. I planned to stay for a year and then move on. But as you can see; I am still here! I taught English for almost five years, but recently took over as the manager of the San Pedro Lodge, a small jungle lodge near Iquitos.
Iquitos is a great place to live, as well as to visit. It has a surprisingly open-minded spirit, and a very active 'lavender' community (a word I decided to use instead of that awful LGBTQ-and-what-have-you-abbreviation). Sure, it isn't San Francisco or Amsterdam, two cities where I also lived for many years, but that is probably not why you decided to travel to the Amazon in the first place.
The San Pedro Lodge welcomes lavender visitors with open arms. Let us show you the sites in and around Iquitos, and take you on a multi-day tour, or a full-scale rainforest expedition to one of our national reserves.
For those people who are looking for a spiritual experience, we offer a special five-day jungle expedition to Tamshiyacu-Tahuayo, where you can take part in an authentic ayahuasca ceremony, guided by a genuine shaman.
So, if you would like to see and experience the Amazon rainforest first hand, rest assured that Iquitos is a great destination. A stay at the San Pedro Lodge is very affordable, and so are our day trips, tours and expeditions. Please check out our website for details.
I'm looking forward to welcoming you to Iquitos!
